Belonging

If my cat could speak, he’d say ‘where there’s food’
if my dog could reply, he’d bark ‘on your bed’
If I asked my brothers they might tell me ‘watching football’
and dad would inform me ‘with a book I’ve just read’
If my mum was musing, she could say ‘in my camper van’
My nan would perhaps think about baking cakes
while my friends might begrudgingly admit ‘at school’
though this early they’d rather not be awake
Enquire to a bird, would it squawk ‘in my nest’?
Would a monkey decide to say ‘up a tree’?
Would a diver tell of combing the ocean’s depths
or is there somewhere else they’d rather be?
Myself, I’d likely answer simply ‘at home’, a place that is safe, where the welcome is strong
But what would you answer if I was to ask you where you feel that you truly belong?
